Seldom do you come across an interesting biography, but in this fictionalized biographical account of Vincent Van Gogh, Irving Stone has accomplished this feat, giving a fluent account of the artist’s life reconstructed from his letters to his brother Theo (approximately 700). There can hardly be a life more poignantly painful, solitary and misunderstood and an after-life more glorious. With more than 2,100 artworks (860 oil paintings and 1,300 watercolors, drawings, sketches) produced in just over a decade, but not even three-digit art works sold during his lifetime. “Just as each vivid brushstroke elevates a Van Gogh masterpiece, every detail of our Wealth Management solutions has been finely crafted to raise banking to an art form.” – RBS Punchline (Van Gogh Preferred Banking) Travels with Figment: On the Road in Search of Disney Dreams (By Disney Legend Marty Sklar). She weaves her riveting tale to give her fragile daughter a reason to live, even as her own strength wanes. Blenkinsop fights for the survival of both mother and newborn, Wollstonecraft recounts the life she dared to live amidst the impossible constraints and prejudices of the late 18th century, rejecting the tyranny of men and marriage, risking everything to demand equality for herself and all women. Some lawmakers saw the prospect of another compromise as the nation's best bet for survival. Slavery and states' rights had been at the center of the election, and Lincoln had vowed during his campaign to not restrict slavery where it already existed, but to limit its expansion to the western territories.Ī series of concessions to the slaveholding southern states, from the Missouri Compromise in 1820 to the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854, had helped manage sectional crisis and hold the Union together. Following Abraham Lincoln’s victory in the 1860 presidential election, 11 southern states seceded from the Union. What is acceptable, nay riveting, on the page is verbose and unconvincing on the screen. Unfortunately, these seem to have been lifted from the book and grafted onto the programme. The book is driven by it and often the characters have long, involved conversations. The most abject let-down was in the dialogue. It was vanishingly unlikely that any director would have been able to convey properly the social, political and emotional currents of those complex and volatile times so the slavish adherence to the book meant that the whole TV project would be a failure unless it had been adapted for modern audiences while retaining and explaining the themes and background. But the series is "based on" rather than an "adaptation of". The sets are magnificent and are the sole reason I have given three stars. The novel was a cry against and riposte to the fashionable nihilistic and Western tendencies of the times that were taking hold of some of the privileged Russian youth. The wonderful book, one of the best novels ever to have been written, was done a disservice by this mini series. Hand’s writing can be stiff, and Lexie’s ex-boyfriend, Steven, is a too-perfect cipher, but she persuasively conveys the aftermath of suicide and the ways those left behind struggle with grief, anger, and guilt. During the two-month span over which the novel is set, Lexie sees a therapist (reluctantly), reunites with an old friend, withstands another suicide in her Nebraska high school, and learns more about what Ty was thinking. When the book opens, seven weeks after Ty’s death, Lexie’s grades have slipped, she has broken up with her boyfriend, and she feels like she might be going crazy. Then her younger brother, Ty, commits suicide. Hand (the Unearthly trilogy) shifts to realistic fiction with the story of Lexie, a math star and unashamed nerd whose biggest problems are the aftereffects of her parents’ divorce and wondering whether she’ll get into MIT. |
